Knife Skills Make Everything Easier in the kitchen

The right knife and a little practice can take a lot of frustration out of cooking, especially if you’re new to the kitchen.

Join Chelsea Community Kitchen for an Expert Knife Skills class Thursday, May 5, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the kitchen of the First United Methodist Church at 128 Park St, Chelsea MI. The class fee is $50 and class size is limited to allow for hands-on experience.

The knife is a cook’s most important tool. Learn how to buy one, how to care for it, and, most importantly, how to use it properly to make cooking easy and enjoyable!

“This is a basic class for people who don’t have a lot of cooking experience,” says Liza Baker, a chef and integrative nutrition health coach who teaches the Expert Knife Skills class.

“A good knife really makes a difference in the kitchen,” she adds. “A lot of people think they don’t like to cook because they’re using the wrong knives for the job or the knives aren’t sharp enough.”

Students learn how to select the right knives for them and learn how to sharpen and care for them. They’ll also learn some basic cutting techniques and get an opportunity to practice on a variety of vegetables for a stew cooked (and sampled!) in class.

Instructor Liza Baker has a culinary arts degree from the Cooking and Hospitality Institute of Chicago (now part of Le Cordon Bleu) and a certificate in integrative nutrition health coaching. She has worked as private chef and a caterer and teaches basic cooking skills at Simply: Health Coaching and at Knights Family Kitchen in Ann Arbor. Her cookbook Fl!p Your K!tchenwill be released in October 2016.
